Staying Positive Throughout Your Job Search
Job loss, and the process of searching for a new job, can be stressful and confusing.
However, this time period can also present an opportunity for self-growth and skill- building. Below are three strategies to help make your job search a positive experience:
Keep Busy and Do Things You Enjoy
Job-searching is a job in itself! It is very important to maintain a regular and productive schedule. Wake up early, exercise and start job- searching. Attend Networking Groups and Job Search Workshops, as this can be a great way to get out of the house and maintain a positive outlook. Remember to take time for yourself to do the things that you enjoy. Take up a hobby that you have always wanted to do, volunteer or visit old friends. Balance is key!
Use Positive Self-Talk
We must remember how powerful and influential our thoughts are on our overall self-image and confidence. If you think negatively, and blame yourself for your unemployed status, it will be harder to keep positive. Always remember your strengths, your skills and to think positively about the future. Listen to your self-talk. Make sure you are speaking in positive language and not criticizing yourself all day long. Remember, positive attitudes come from within.
It is very important to know that you are not alone in this situation. Most likely, a friend, family-member or a previous co-worker has gone through the same experience at some point, and can provide understanding and support. It is important to let the people in your life know that you are unemployed and looking for work. First, you never know what opportunities they may know of and secondly, having a support system is important for keeping a positive attitude.
